From the Garden Plot: And...We're Off!
And we are off …
It was with much excitement I headed down to the basement Saturday morning and started seeds! I officially declare “Gardening Season” now open.
In this first round of seeds are: Cayenne Peppers, Chocolate Habanero Peppers, Chinese 5 Color Peppers, Jimmy Nardello Peppers, California Wonder Peppers, Pandora Striped Rose Eggplant, Red of Florence Onions, Bianca di Maggio Onions and Australian Brown Onions.
I’m using two Burpee brand seed starting systems. I haven’t used Burpee before so we’ll see how things progress. Under the perfect conditions, which undoubtedly my little basement setup is not, the peppers should germinated within 7 to 10 days, same with the onions. The eggplants however could take up to 3 weeks. And even though I know they aren’t there yet, I walk by everyday and whisper words of encouragement to my little darlings. And, in about two weeks time I will start my tomatoes and tomatillos.
It sounds so silly, but I am truly amazed that from these little seeds come life and food. It’s a delight to nurture this process from the basement to the sunny dining room window to the garden and onto my plate.
So even if by the weather outside you wouldn’t know it’s Spring, just peak into my basement … cause it’s happening!
